Poland Urges NATO To Weigh A No‑Fly Zone After Drone Incursions

Poland is sounding the alarm. Its leaders want NATO to consider a tough new response: a no-fly zone over Ukraine. The proposal follows a wave of Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace, an event that raised security fears across the alliance. Analysts now wonder if Europe has entered a new phase in the Ukraine war—one that puts NATO soil directly at risk.

Russian drones crossed into Poland last week, triggering one of the largest air defense responses in recent years. At least 19 drones were tracked over Polish territory. Fighter jets from Poland, the Netherlands, and other NATO partners scrambled to intercept and shoot down several of the craft.

Airports were closed, and debris from the drones struck buildings, with reports of damage in Lublin province. Polish officials described the incident as unprecedented and called for swift action. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated bluntly, “This is a direct threat.”

Poland’s foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, took the case directly to NATO and the European Union. Sikorski told German media, “We as NATO and the EU could be doing this, but it is not a decision Poland can make alone; it can only be made with its allies.” He emphasized that responding to threats beyond Poland’s borders would help protect civilians from falling debris or worse.

His remarks echoed warnings from other leaders, including Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian officials had advocated for a no-fly zone since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. NATO debated the move in 2022 but stopped short.

The risks of direct engagement with Russian forces were deemed too high. Now, after repeated drone incidents in Poland and Romania, the conversation is back—this time, with more urgency.

British and Romanian fighters joined the air patrols in recent days, offering support and deterrence. The UK announced that RAF Typhoons would soon fly air-defense missions in Poland alongside Dutch and German jets. “Russia’s reckless behavior is a direct threat to European security and a violation of international law,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

Regional Security on Edge

In addition to tightening airspace defenses, Poland moved rapidly to close its border with Belarus. The government cited national security concerns amid Russia and Belarus’s ongoing military exercises near Polish territory.

Neighbors like Lithuania joined efforts to reinforce their own borders. France, Sweden, and Norway pledged extra fighter deployments. The mood across NATO is anxious.

Russian officials responded by blaming errant winds and technical problems for their drones crossing into NATO airspace. “No targets in Poland were intended for destruction,” Moscow’s defense ministry claimed. Yet Polish leaders remain wary. They invoked NATO’s Article 4, a rare step that signals serious alliance concern.

What comes next is unclear. Pressure on NATO is mounting. Sikorski insists, “If Ukraine were to ask us to shoot them down over its territory, that would be advantageous for us. Personally, I believe we should consider it.” For now, the question remains: Will the alliance act? Or is this the new normal for a continent at war?
